Help our School by collecting Trash for Cash

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

You can help our school kids by saving your trash. Save Box Tops for Education from General Mills cereals, Betty Crocker products, Klenex Tissue, Ziploc bags, and many more products. Also collect Campbell’s soup UPC’s. These are the bar codes that can be scanned. We can no longer send in the front labels. The third thing to save are the UPC’s from Our Family products. These UPC’s all start with the numbers 70253. Please save these UPC’s separate from the Campbell’s UPC’s which start with 51000. The fourth thing to save are the milk lids from Land O Lakes gallons that have the words savefiveforschools.“  Here is the link to their website:    http://www.savefiveforschools.com/ i f you would like to know about their program.  All these things can be turned into the school, Murdo Family Foods, Senior Citizens Center, or Classic Service.

Please save all these items and help our school.

I am also looking for volunteers to help cut and count all these items to send in. Any one willing to help please call Elaine Roghair at 669-2819. We could have a work day sometime if a group would like to do this. I’ve been working on the Box Tops for Education since 1997. I really think we could collect more if everyone saves.

Thanks for your help.

Jones County School Lunch Program

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

 eds064.jpg

Our school lunch program is fairly new to the Jones County Students (in its 2nd year??).  We would like to know what the students think of their school lunch program.  Do you like eating lunch at school every day?  Is the food good?  Is there more than one choice in the daily menu?  What are the beverages they serve?  Do you have enough time to eat your meal?

If there are things you don’t like, do you have any suggestions to make things better?  Let the comments roll………………………………………..  :-)

TONIGHT’s the NIGHT!!

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Tonight…………(TUESDAY, April 29th), is the open house blog training for the Murdo Area community!!  Sure do hope to have a good turnout for the blog training tonight.  I have been thinking about this for a few days and decided that it might be fun to have an opinion poll for people tonight to vote on.  Since we are giving each person who shows up tonight an energy-saving lightbulb, I thought an opinion poll on “go green” would be appropriate.

School of Mines Introduction to Grant Writing Workshop

Friday, April 25th, 2008

I was up early (6:45 a.m.) and on the road to Rapid City on Wednesday, April 16th to attend the School of Mines Grant Writing Workshop.  I sat at a table with 2 other Horizon people from Hot Springs!!  I would like to thank the Murdo Area Horizons for sponsoring me to attend this workshop.  It made for a long day but I learned a lot!!

The workshop was taught by Stephanie Schweitzer Dixon, who has worked as a grant writer and a consultant for non-profit organizations for ten years.  We learned the key steps involved in planning a project, seeking grant funding, writing the grant proposal and managing the grant-funded program.  All of this information is also in Stephanie’s Introduction to Grant Writing Workbook.

I won’t go into the many details of grant writing here on this blog because it would take too long!  I will share one thing that with you though.  I learned that writing a grant for a private foundation is a lot easier than writing a grant for the Federal/State government!!    :-)

Each person attending this workshop received Stephanie’s Intro to Grant Writing Workbook and a personal certificate of completion.
